Streaming replaced broadcast; open plans replaced formal living rooms — yet fireplace persists as architectural focal point. Real flame or LED illusion, the hearth signals gathering: wine after dinner, book in reading nook adjacent, conversation facing heat not television (though TV above mantel debate eternal).
Design the surround right and room orients itself.
Fuel types and honesty
Wood-burning — romance, smoke, chimney maintenance, urban bans increasing — check local codes. Real heat in power outage. Storage and cleaning labor.
Gas (direct vent) — flip switch fire; venting through wall; lower maintenance; less scent.
Electric — no vent; apartment friendly; flame simulation improved; heat secondary; easiest install.
Ethanol — ventless modern installs; fuel cost; heat modest.
Choose fuel before designing stone surround — clearances non-negotiable.
Proportion and placement
Mantel height ~54–60 inches floor to bottom common — art and mirror scale from here. Opening width relate to room — oversized fireplace swallows small parlors; undersized looks like insert afterthought.
Symmetry — built-ins flanking classic; one side home bar integration modern.
Asymmetry — single bench seat one side, wood stack niche other — wabi-sabi adjacent philosophy.
Materials
Stone — limestone, slate, marble; heat tolerant; heavy structural load verify.
Brick — traditional; paint white modern; original patina limewash compatible.
Plaster — seamless minimalist surround.
Tile — zellige, handmade; Mediterranean echo.
Steel — contemporary insert frames; industrial contrast in japandi rooms.
Mantel shelf depth 8–12 inches — display without clutter avalanche.
TV above mantel?
Heat and neck strain arguments against. If inevitable: recessed niche, heat shield, articulating mount, minimize mantel decor height competition. Better: TV elsewhere; fireplace art focal.
Styling the mantel
Rule of thirds — tall object one side (branch, sculpture), lower group other, mirror or art above. Seasonal rotation. Not every ceramic mug owned simultaneously.
Seating arrangement
Sofa facing or angled to hearth — conversation pit psychology. Artisan textiles rug defines zone. Adequate clearance from heat source per code.
Outdoor fireplaces
Extension of patio design — chimney or fire bowl; seating circle; smoke drift neighbor awareness.
Conclusion
Fireplace design declares room priority — heat, beauty, ritual. Gas or wood or electric matters less than proportion, material honesty, and seating that faces the flame.
Build hearth; gatherings follow — even if gathering is just you and a book.
